Tile trims

The right tile edging profile is 1 – 2 mm taller than the tile itself. For an 8 mm thick tile, you use a 10 mm profile; for 10 mm tiles, an 11 or 12.5 mm profile; for thin 4 mm vinyl or design flooring, a 6 mm profile.
The reason is the tile adhesive, which adds about 1 mm in the thin-bed method. Without this buffer, the tile would protrude above the profile, the edge would be unprotected, and a trip hazard would result. With natural stone or porcelain stoneware that uses a thicker adhesive bed, you should choose at the upper end of the buffer range.

There are four common profile types: angle profiles, square profiles, quarter-round profiles, and flexible tile edging profiles. Each shape has a clear purpose and specific standard heights.
Angle profiles are the most robust and versatile variant with an L-shape. At tirocco, they are available in heights from 2 to 30 mm and are suitable for thin vinyl flooring as well as thick patio tiles. Square profiles have an angular, modern look and are often used for pre-wall elements, stairs, or tile backsplashes — matching corner pieces are available. Quarter-round profiles have a rounded visible edge for soft transitions, typically in the bathroom or at shower trays. Flexible tile edging profiles have a serrated leg that can be laid around curves and arches.
All types are available as inner and outer corners (aluminium, stainless steel, PVC) for a clean, visually seamless corner connection.

For indoor areas we recommend aluminium, for wet areas and outdoors stainless steel V2A or V4A, as an affordable alternative PVC, and for design accents brass. So the choice of material primarily depends on the location and load, not just on price.
Aluminium can be anodised or powder-coated and is therefore available in many colours — silver, black, white, titanium, gold, concrete grey. For wet areas like showers, kitchens, or outdoor use, stainless steel V2A is the right choice because it doesn't rust. V4A is chloride-resistant and intended for swimming pools or coastal environments. PVC is the most affordable option, but only suitable for lightly used indoor areas. Brass offers an elegant, warm look and works especially well in combination with dark or earthy tile tones.
All four materials are available at tirocco as angle and square profiles; quarter-round profiles are available in aluminium, stainless steel and PVC.

In practice, all three terms describe the same product: an edge finish for laid tiles. In technical language, "tile profile" is the generic term that also covers transition, trim, and decorative profiles, while "tile edging profile" and "tile strip" are commonly used specifically for edge-finishing profiles.
Other synonyms you may encounter when searching for products are tile trim strip, tile edge profile, edging profile, or edge protection profile. In every case it refers to the same thing: a profile that protects the exposed tile edge from chipping and damage, creates a visually clean transition, and often serves as a trip-hazard safeguard.
To be distinguished from classic tile edging profiles are pure transition profiles (e.g. tile to wood, surface-mounted) and skirting profiles (wall finishes close to the floor).

Tile edging profiles are not technically mandatory, but highly recommended for three reasons: they protect the exposed tile edges from chipping, they prevent sharp upper edges, and they provide a visually clean finish.
Alternatives are only of limited value. A silicone joint as an edge finish ages quickly, yellows, and must be renewed every 2 – 5 years. Ground tile edges (gerondé) are expensive, only possible with certain formats, and remain mechanically sensitive. A properly installed tile profile, on the other hand, lasts practically the entire service life of the covering.
The use is particularly worthwhile at pre-wall elements, shower bases, window reveals, kitchen splashbacks, stair treads, and wherever tiles end at free edges. In the bathroom, practically every exposed tile edge is a suitable application.

Tile edging profiles are always laid together with the tiles in the thin-bed method — not retrofitted afterwards. The process involves five steps.
Step 1: Cut the profile to length; for corners, cut at a 45° mitre or use matching inner/outer corners.
Step 2: Apply tile adhesive in the thin-bed method to the edge to be finished.
Step 3: Press the profile into the adhesive with the perforated leg, until the visible leg sits flat at the later tile height.
Step 4: Bed the edge tile into the adhesive with a narrow connection joint (approx. 2 – 3 mm) to the profile.
Step 5: Fill the connection joint with grout (for wet and outdoor areas: flexible or cement-based mortar); remove excess grout immediately.

Choosing the correct profile height (tile thickness + 1 – 2 mm) before installation is important. A profile that's too low cannot be flushed later on.

A proper retrofit is only possible to a limited extent. A profile embedded in the adhesive bed practically cannot be replaced without destroying the edge tile. However, there are two alternatives if the flooring is already laid.
Alternative 1 is surface-mounted profiles — flat aluminium or PVC strips that are glued onto the tile edge with MS polymer adhesive or assembly adhesive. Visually they are recognisable as retrofitted, but functionally they reliably protect the edge. Alternative 2 is a freshly drawn silicone edge joint, if visual demands are low.
Low-profile angle profiles made of aluminium or stainless steel are particularly suitable for surface mounting. Be sure to degrease the bonding surface (acetone) and apply the adhesive as a continuous bead, then press the profile on and fix it in place for 24 hours.

A clean mitre cut (45°) is necessary when you want to join two profiles at a corner without using corner pieces. The appropriate tool depends on the material.
For stainless steel, a hacksaw with a mitre box (the simplest and most accurate method) is recommended; alternatively a flex grinder with speed control at low speed, or a jigsaw with an HSS saw blade. A fresh, sharp blade is important — dull blades wander off course and cause burrs. For aluminium, a chop or circular saw with an aluminium blade is suitable, and a jigsaw with aluminium teeth also works. PVC can be easily cut with a mitre box and a fine-tooth hand saw. Brass is worked like aluminium.
After the cut, you should deburr the cut edge (with a file or sandpaper) so that the two profiles meet flat and without sharp edges at the corner joint.

Add up all linear metres of tile edges to be protected and add 10 % for waste. In rooms with many corners, 15 % is safer.
Example shower niche: two vertical edges of 1.20 m each and one upper edge of 1.00 m gives 3.40 m. With 10 % waste, that's 3.74 m, so two profile lengths of 250 cm each are enough. You also need matching corners — one piece per inner or outer corner. Standard lengths at tirocco are 100 cm, 250 cm and 300 cm; the 3-metre bar significantly reduces waste on long runs.
Tip: Rather measure once too much than too little. A later reorder from a different production batch may show minimal colour or surface differences, especially with anodised aluminium and brass.

For the transition between tiles and another floor covering, you don't need a tile profile but a transition or height-compensation profile. Tile edging profiles are intended exclusively for the tile side.
At equal build-up height (e.g. 10 mm tile = 10 mm design flooring), a flat transition profile in L- or T-shape is sufficient. With different heights, e.g. 10 mm tile to 14 mm parquet, you need a height-compensation profile with a ramp. For very thin coverings like vinyl or design flooring (2 – 4 mm), low angle profiles 2 – 4 mm tall are ideal — they are mounted on the tile side, and the vinyl covering adjoins the visible edge directly.
A movement joint between the two coverings is also important, especially with wood — wood-based floors work more than tiles and need leeway.
