Sanitary silicone is the ideal sealant for all joints and connections in bathrooms, showers and kitchens that are regularly exposed to water and moisture. It is used to permanently seal transitions between tiles, sanitary ware and adjacent building elements, helping to prevent moisture damage. Typical applications for sanitary silicone include joints around showers, bathtubs, washbasins, toilets as well as kitchen worktops and sinks. Joints in sanitary areas are subject to particularly high stress. In addition to constant moisture, they are exposed to temperature fluctuations, cleaning agents and mechanical movement. Sanitary silicone is specifically designed to meet these requirements and provides a reliable, watertight seal. Compared to other sealants, this silicone offers long-term protection against moisture penetration and helps reduce the risk of mould growth behind tiles or sanitary fixtures.
Silicone sealant for sanitary areas is characterised by high elasticity, strong adhesion and excellent water resistance. In addition, sanitary silicones contain mould-resistant additives that help ensure hygienic joints in bathrooms and kitchens. A distinction is also made between neutral-curing silicone and acetoxy-curing silicone.
The mould-inhibiting formulation makes it more difficult for mould to form in damp areas such as showers or bathtubs. As a result, joints remain cleaner and more visually appealing for longer. This property is especially important in wet rooms.
Sanitary silicone remains permanently elastic and is able to absorb movement between tiles, ceramic surfaces and adjacent building elements. As bathrooms are often exposed to significant temperature changes, this flexibility is particularly important. At the same time, sanitary silicone is fully waterproof, making it ideal for wet areas such as bathtubs and showers.
Acetoxy-curing sanitary silicone offers excellent adhesion to smooth, non-sensitive substrates such as glass, ceramic and enamel. It is commonly used for classic sanitary joints in bathrooms and showers. During curing, acetic acid is released, which causes the typical vinegar-like smell. However, this type of silicone is not suitable for sensitive materials.
This type of silicone is particularly material-friendly and suitable for sensitive substrates. It helps prevent discolouration and ensures a clean, even joint appearance. As no acetic acid is released during curing, it is low-odour and ideal for high-quality or visible surfaces in sanitary areas.
For a long-lasting joint, old silicone residues should be completely removed and the surface must be clean and dry. The silicone cartridge is inserted into a cartridge gun, which allows the silicone to be applied evenly and with control. After application, the sanitary silicone should be smoothed to achieve a clean finish. Full curing depends on the thickness of the joint.
