Tile Tanking – Reliable Waterproofing for Showers and Bathrooms

A tile tanking system protects walls and floors in wet areas from moisture penetration. The membrane is applied directly beneath the tile layer and, together with the thin-bed adhesive and tiles, forms a bonded waterproofing membrane that keeps water away from the building structure. In our shop you will find the shower waterproofing membrane ET-S – tested to DIN 18534-5 and ETA-certified – as well as the self adhesive shower waterproof membrane with additional impact sound insulation.

What Is Tile Tanking?

Tile tanking is a waterproofing method in which a bonded waterproof membrane is applied directly beneath the tile finish. The membrane is firmly bonded to both the substrate and the tile adhesive, creating a durable system that reliably prevents moisture from reaching the building fabric. DIN 18534 sets out the requirements for bonded waterproofing in interior wet areas and classifies exposure into different water impact classes.

Tile Tanking in the Shower and Bathroom

In showers and bathrooms, a tile tanking system is essential wherever splash water and running water regularly come into contact with tiled surfaces. Our membranes cover different requirements and offer a reliable waterproof bond and seal:

  • The DURAL membrane ET-S is made from polypropylene (approx. 0.67 mm), installed in thin-bed adhesive, tested to DIN 18534-5 and rated up to water impact class W3-I.
  • The self-adhesive membrane WS is made from polyethylene (approx. 0.8 mm), fixed with a spray primer and additionally provides –11 dB impact sound reduction.

Whether you choose the traditional thin-bed installation or the quick self-adhesive method, both systems form a complete tile tanking kit for professional bathroom waterproofing.

How Thick Should a Tile Tanking Membrane Be?

The thickness of a tile tanking membrane depends on the system used. What matters most is that the membrane is applied fully bonded and free of air pockets to create a continuous barrier. Proper workmanship – including clean overlaps and sealed corners – is just as important as the material itself.

You can find more products for bathroom sealing such as sealing strips, corner pieces and pipe collars in our shop.

Typical membranes range from 0.67 to 0.8 mm in thickness. More important than the thickness alone is ensuring the membrane is applied fully bonded and free of air pockets to guarantee a continuous waterproof barrier.

A tile tanking system</strong> is required wherever tiles regularly come into contact with water – including showers, bathrooms, commercial kitchens and wellness areas. DIN 18534 classifies these areas into different water impact classes.

Yes – that is exactly how a bonded waterproofing membrane works. The membrane is installed beneath the tiles and bonded to both the substrate and the tile adhesive, forming a fully sealed system that can be tiled over directly.
