Acrylic sealant, often referred to as painter’s acrylic, is mainly used for interior applications. It is suitable for connection and expansion joints on walls, ceilings and window frames, as well as for drywall work and repairing small cracks in masonry. Acrylic is the right choice wherever clean, discreet joints are required that visually blend into wall and ceiling surfaces. The decorating caulk from Otto is our clear recommendation for these applications.

Acrylic sealants are easy to apply and offer good adhesion to many mineral substrates. Compared to silicone, acrylic is less elastic, but very versatile for interior finishing work.
A major advantage of acrylic is that it is paintable. Once fully cured, acrylic can be painted over with standard wall or emulsion paints. This makes painter’s acrylic ideal for visible interior joints where a uniform appearance is desired.
Acrylic is not permanently water-resistant and is therefore not suitable for wet rooms or exterior applications. It should only be used in dry interior areas. For bathrooms, showers, kitchens or exterior joints, silicone is the better choice.
The choice between acrylic and silicone depends on the application. Acrylic is suitable for dry interior areas and wherever joints need to be painted over. Silicone is used when joints are permanently exposed to moisture or need to accommodate movement.
For a clean acrylic joint, the surface should be clean, dry and free from dust. The sealant cartridge is inserted into a suitable cartridge gun. Using the gun, the acrylic is applied evenly into the joint and then smoothed. Once cured, the joint can be painted over. Drying time depends on joint thickness and ambient conditions.
