At first glance, choosing the height of tile rails seems like a minor detail – but this is precisely where many of the most common planning mistakes occur. Even a difference of just a few millimetres can affect the visual and functional outcome. Thinking about material thicknesses, adhesive bed height and installation height at an early stage will help you avoid problems later on during installation.
What is the correct tile profile height?
Are you unsure about which height to choose for your tile trims? We are happy to help. A layer of tile adhesive is applied between the tile rail and the tiles. We therefore recommend always choosing a tile rail that is 1–2 mm higher than the tile thickness.
How to determine the right profile height
The following table will assist you in selecting the ideal profile height based on your tile height:
Tile height | Recommended profile height |
---|---|
4 to 5 mm | 6 mm |
6 to 7 mm | 8 mm |
8 mm | 9 mm |
9 mm | 10 mm |
10 to 12 mm | 12.5 mm |
What happens if the profile height does not fit?
If the tile profile is too low, the tile will protrude, posing a risk of injury or creating an untidy finish. If it is too high, it will create a visually distracting height difference. In both cases, the appearance suffers – and in the worst case, so does the function. That is why precise planning is worthwhile.
