Acetoxy-Curing Silicone – classic silicone curing system

Acetoxy-curing silicone, also known as acetoxy silicone, is a proven type of silicone sealant widely used for standard applications in sanitary and construction areas. During curing, acetic acid is released, which causes the characteristic vinegar-like smell. This curing system has been successfully used for many years and is known for its excellent adhesion to smooth, non-porous surfaces. Our premium bathroom silicone sealant belongs to this type of silicone.

Properties of acetoxy-curing silicone

Acetoxy-curing silicone remains permanently elastic, is waterproof and cures relatively quickly. Due to its chemical properties, it offers reliable adhesion to typical sanitary substrates.

Excellent adhesion to glass and ceramic

Acetoxy silicone adheres particularly well to glass, ceramic and enamel. For this reason, it is commonly used as sanitary silicone in bathrooms, showers or for glazing applications. For classic sanitary joints on non-sensitive substrates, acetoxy-curing silicone is a proven solution.

Typical vinegar smell during curing

During the curing process, acetic acid is released, which causes the characteristic vinegar-like smell. This odour disappears completely once the silicone has fully cured. The vinegar smell is a clear indicator of this type of silicone and distinguishes it from neutral-curing variants.

Where should acetoxy-curing silicone not be used?

Acetoxy-curing silicone is not suitable for all substrates. On sensitive materials such as natural stone or certain metals, it may cause discolouration or material reactions. In these cases, neutral-curing silicone should be used, as it offers higher material compatibility.

How to use acetoxy-curing silicone correctly

Acetoxy-curing silicone is mainly suitable for sanitary joints and applications on smooth, non-sensitive surfaces. Proper surface preparation is essential to ensure optimal adhesion. When selecting the product, make sure that the silicone is suitable for the intended application, such as bathrooms or showers.

You can find acrylic sealants and other types of silicone in the category silicone caulk.

FAQs

Questions and answers

Acetic cross-linking silicone is particularly suitable for sanitary joints in bathrooms and showers, as well as for use on glass, ceramics and enamel.

Silicone cross-linked with vinegar offers excellent adhesion to smooth, non-sensitive substrates, while neutral cross-linked silicone is more compatible with materials and is suitable for natural stone or metals.

Acetic cross-linking silicone is not suitable for sensitive materials such as natural stone or certain metals, as it can cause discolouration or material reactions.

No, acetic-cured silicone should not be diluted. Dilution impairs adhesion and curing and can negatively affect the function of the joint.
